True Example of a Valley Stream "Go Getter" - David Sabatino



There's a new administration in town and things are already looking up for the teen community here in Valley Stream.  There's talk of a skate park, a dog park, and some are even trying to figure out what to do about the teen complaint of "there's nothing to do" in Valley Stream.  Really?  Some of our unmotivated, uninvolved, or unsupervised teens think so.  Are you one of them?  Do you know one?  Take a look at this article in this week's Valley Stream edition of the Long Island Herald featuring David Sabatino who is always in the community doing something positive.  A native of VS, he's the founder of Envision Valley Stream, and part owner of Sip This, a coffee shop opening this spring on Rockaway.  Find him on Facebook.  He's definitely one to watch.  Click on the link below for the full article.

Touring the Ivy Leagues

Staying true to my commitment of sharing all information I come across, here is a little info on Ivy League college tours.  After visiting Amherst College with my husband a few weeks ago, I had no idea that such a tour existed.  This is why I am passing it on to you.  You or your parents may not know either.  Schedule this trip during your Junior year to get a feel for all of the schools.  During your senior year, you can visit the ones that you have been accepted to.  Good luck!

Volunteering: Get It In!

My husband and I spent the weekend participating in Black Alumni College Weekend at Amherst College which is where he attended from
'94 - '98.  I was so impressed by this group of students who were about 18 - 20 years younger than I.  I was only offended once after I and some of the other non-students were referred to as "elders."  What?  I asked my neighbor, "Did she really just say what I thought she said?"  I mean, I am still in my 30's, you know.

During one of the many workshops and discussions we participated in was with the head of admissions who had just hours earlier, sent out acceptance emails to the incoming Freshman class.  Emails?  Back in my day we were mailed letters but that was 20 years ago which was before the world was introduced to the Internet.  I will reveal the information from the admissions discussion later, but what did stick out was how important community service is when applying to college.  If I were you, I think it is better to start community service now and not rush to find something to do during your senior year.  It looks better on a college application when you exhibit a strong history in community service as opposed to participating in 1 -2 events months before college apps are due.  Get it in now!
